Master the MyNav Search Bar — Filter Your Cards and Search the Web

The search box at the top of MyNav does two jobs at once, and knowing exactly when it does which is what makes it feel fast.

Mode 1: As you type — it filters your homepage

Start typing and MyNav immediately narrows down the cards in your current view:

  • Matches against titles, URLs, and notes — so typing "invoice" finds that billing portal whose title never mentions invoices
  • Searches only the folders you're currently looking at, so results stay relevant
  • No matches? You'll see a clear empty state instead of silence

Use this when the thing you want is somewhere in MyNav already.

Mode 2: Enter or click the engine icon — search the web

Press Enter or click the engine icon next to the box, and your query opens in a new tab using your selected search engine. Use this when the thing you want is on the internet.

The flow is deliberate: filter first (fast, zero page load), escalate to the web only when MyNav doesn't have it.

Pick and customize your engine

Click the ⚙ icon to open engine settings:

  • Built-in engines: Google, Bing, DuckDuckGo, Brave, Perplexity

  • Custom engines: add any site search — just give it a name and a URL template containing {query}. For example:

    • YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query={query}
    • GitHub: https://github.com/search?q={query}
    • Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/s?k={query}
    • Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?search={query}

Your default engine is saved to your account and follows you across devices; visitors can try everything too (preferences are remembered locally until they sign up).

Two small habits

  1. Name custom engines by purpose — "yt" is cute, "YouTube" reads better if you add more later
  2. Put unusual terms in notes — if a card's title doesn't contain the word you'd naturally search, add that word to the card's note; filtering matches notes too

That's the whole trick: type to find what you've saved, Enter to find what you haven't.
