Account Security Guide: Passwords, Email Changes, and Recovery

Your account is the one thing on MyNav you cannot rebuild: bookmarks can be re-added, folders recreated, but if the account is gone, everything you organized goes with it. This guide covers every account operation, including a few details that are easy to get wrong.

Forgot your password: reset with a 6-digit code

On the sign-in page, choose "Forgot password" and enter your registered email. We send a message containing a 6-digit verification code.

  • The code is valid for 10 minutes; request a new one if it expires
  • Enter the code and set a new password — the old password stops working immediately
  • If nothing arrives, check spam first; corporate mail filters often block verification codes

A password reset deletes nothing. Bookmarks, folders, and custom search engines all stay exactly as they were.

Changing your password signs out other devices

Go to Settings → Account → Password. One behavior is worth knowing in advance:

Changing your password signs out every other device. The device you are using stays signed in.

This exists to close the gap where a leaked password still has a live session attached to it. If you have ever signed in on a shared computer, one password change revokes all of those entry points at once.

The only hard requirement is at least 8 characters. Use a password manager and generate something random rather than appending a digit to a password you already reuse.

Changing your email: nothing changes until you confirm

Your email address is the only path back into your account, so the flow is deliberately slow:

  1. Open Settings → Account → Change email
  2. Enter the new address and your current password
  3. We send a 6-digit code to the new address
  4. Enter the code to confirm

Until that final step, the account still belongs to the old address — it keeps receiving mail and can still reset your password. That way, a typo in the new address can never lock you out.

If you ever find your account pointing at an address you do not recognize, treat it as a compromise: reset the password through the old mailbox immediately and review your bookmarks for changes.

Deleting your account: cancel the subscription first

Settings → Account → Delete account permanently removes your bookmarks, folders, and the account itself. It cannot be undone.

Two things to settle before you pull that trigger:

  • If a Pro subscription is active, cancel it under "Plan & billing" first, otherwise billing continues
  • Export anything you want to keep (export is a Pro feature, available as HTML or JSON)

Deletion takes effect immediately — there is no 30-day grace period. That is also why the flow has no retention pop-up: if you have decided, you should not have to decline three times.

About sessions

MyNav uses one strictly necessary cookie to keep you signed in. There are no third-party tracking scripts, which is why you never see a cookie banner here. On a shared machine, sign out properly instead of just closing the tab.

When something goes wrong

Locked out after a password change, codes that never arrive, an email address that changed without you — all of these can go through the feedback page. Include your account email and roughly when it happened and we can move much faster. The full rules for personal data are in our privacy policy.
