Browser bookmarks vs MyNav: when the built-in bar stops being enough
If you have under a hundred bookmarks and only use one browser, the built-in bar is genuinely enough — do not install anything. The built-in system breaks in three specific places: you cannot search the page content you saved, you cannot store a snippet without a URL, and the moment you use two browsers the two lists diverge permanently.
| Feature | MyNav | Built-in browser bookmarks |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | Free up to 100 items, then $3/month | Free, always |
| Search scope | Titles, URLs, notes, saved page text | Titles and URLs only |
| Notes | Long notes plus standalone text cards | Name field only; a URL is mandatory |
| Opening experience | Dedicated start page with folders on one screen | A bar under the address field, or a manager window |
| Cross-browser | One account, any browser | Each browser keeps its own list |
| Works offline | No — needs a connection | Yes |
| Data ownership | Export JSON anytime, including notes | Export HTML; notes and structure partially lost |
| Sync account | MyNav account | Google / Microsoft / Apple account |
When to pick MyNav
You work across two or more browsers, keep notes next to links, or have a bar so full that you scroll it sideways looking for things.
When to pick it instead
You use one browser, keep a short list, and want zero setup. There is nothing wrong with that — most people should stay here.
How to migrate
Built-in bookmarks export as a standard Netscape HTML file, which MyNav imports directly. The reverse also works.
- 1Chrome / Edge: Bookmarks → Bookmark manager → the three-dot menu → Export bookmarks.
- 2Safari: File → Export → Bookmarks (produces an HTML file).
- 3Firefox: Library → Import and Backup → Export Bookmarks to HTML.
- 4Upload it in MyNav under Settings → Import. Folder structure is preserved; duplicates are skipped.
Common questions
- Do I lose my bookmarks if I stop using MyNav?
- No. Export JSON or HTML at any time from Settings. HTML can be imported back into any browser, which is exactly why it exists.
- Can MyNav replace the bookmark bar entirely?
- For daily links, yes — set it as your new tab page. For links you need while offline, or one-click access mid-task, keep a short bar as well.
